The solid hair care revolution
Posted 21st July 2021
Did you know that roughly 13 billion plastic bottles are thrown out by British consumers every year? A lot of this plastic waste comes from liquid shampoo, conditioner, and other bathroom products. But there is an alternative.
Solid Bar Shampoos are the hot new trend in beauty and personal care and a must have for the growing market of consumers looking for more eco-friendly personal care products.
Bar Shampoos are a fantastic way to help reduce plastic waste. As well as containing less water, they use less water during the production process and are available in fully recyclable paper packaging. Creating a regular, compact shape means bars can be packed tightly for freight, reducing both their carbon footprint and transport costs. Great for your hair and the environment – a real win-win!
But most importantly they perform as well as their liquid equivalents, with efficacious formulas that leave hair feeling cleansed, nourished and smooth.
How is bar shampoo different from soap?
Traditional bar soap is made by a process called saponification, which is a chemical reaction between two natural ingredients: a fat and a strong alkali – such as sodium hydroxide. Bar soap is naturally alkaline with a pH level of between 9 and 10.
Bar shampoos on the other hand are produced using a specially formulated, high foaming solid synthetic detergent – or Syndet – which has a pH of between 5 and 6.5. This balances with the skin and scalp’s own natural pH levels making it perfect for washing hair. Syndet produces a creamy, lather during use and is a great base for solid shampoo and facial bars.
Importance of scalp care
With hairdressers and barbers closed for part of the year, many of us took matters into our own hands. Google searches for ‘How do I cut my own hair?’ went up 1379% year on year and sales of hair dyes sky rocketed. Scalp health is also a major consumer focus. Seasonal changes, environmental pollution, free radicals and even the stresses and strains of daily life can exacerbate scalp conditions like dandruff, dryness and itchiness. This has seen sales of scalp care products soar. Consumers are starting to appreciate that the scalp is an extension of our skin and needs to be treated with the same love and care.
